What is sober living?

Sober living is a safe and supportive living environment in which the residents have committed to living 100% abstinent from all mind and mood altering substances. Our sober home has a strong focus on 12 step recovery, and improving your physical & mental health.

What is the philosphy behind Oxford House?

The philosophy behind Oxford House is three-fold: [1] self-help is the bedrock of recovery, [2] disciplined democracy is key to living together, and [3] self-support builds efficacy in sobriety comfortable enough to avoid relapse.

Who manages the Oxford House?

Oxford Houses are democratically self-run by the residents who elect officers to serve for terms of six months. Oxford House Kirk has four House Mentors that guide and support the residents. House Mentors are past residents of the home who have maintained long term recovery, and are active in the recovery community.

Why are Oxford Houses self-run?

Oxford Houses are self-run because (1) this permits individuals in recovery to learn responsibility, and (2) lowers the cost to operate the home. Because the houses are self-run and self-supported, it is easier to expand capacity to meet demand rather than requiring individuals to leave in order to make room for newcomers.

What is the success rate?

Oxford House Kirk has experienced a high rate of success for women since its establishment in 2004. 75% of women who live in the house for a minimum of one year have maintained long term sobriety. Many Oxford House alumni live in the Burlington Community and are connected to current residents.

How can one get into an Oxford House?

Any recovering alcoholic or drug addict can apply to get into any Oxford House by filling out an application and being interviewed by the existing members of the House. The application is then considered by the membership of the House and if there is a vacancy and if 80% of the members approve, the applicant is accepted and moves in.
